How to Choose Your College Courses & Make Your Schedule

Are you thinking about creating a college schedule?  If so, it’s probably because you feel like you need to have a schedule in front of you to know what needs to be done when.  This is terrific because it lets you budget your time, set your priorities and make and keep semester goals.  Creating a college schedule can keep you on track throughout your college education so that you achieve what you want to while in school.  Here is a step-by-step method of creating a college schedule that you can use as the basis for your own schedule.

Creating a College Schedule, Step One:

Select a calendar that you will use to create your college schedule.  This may be a daily planner that you purchase at the campus book store, a large-scale desk calendar bought from an office supply spot or a spreadsheet that you create on your computer.  Use a calendar that you’re comfortable with and which you will see regularly.  Make sure that it has enough room for writing in daily activities and that it also allows you to see weekly and monthly commitments in advance.

Creating a College Schedule, Step Two:

At the beginning of each semester, go through the calendar and fill in all of the times that you will be physically in class.  Then look at the syllabus for each class and write in when all projects are due.  As a tip, it helps to pencil due dates in a day or two in advance of the actual deadline so that you’ll have them done before they need to be, in case any problems come up right around the due date.  Also, don’t forget to account for exam week; put the exams on the calendar so you can plan your studying around them.

Creating a College Schedule, Step Three:

Look at all of the other areas of your life that require you to be somewhere at a certain time and pencil those appointments into your calendar.  Doctor’s appointments, sports practice and games, job or volunteer schedules, and even the time it takes you to get to campus if you don’t live there should all be put on the calendar.

Creating a College Schedule, Step Four:

Now you can realistically see what kind of time you’re working with each day.  Figure out how much studying you should be doing daily to do well in your classes.  Pencil specific study time into each day on your calendar.

Hopefully, after you’ve gone through these four steps, you’ll find that you still have some blank times on your calendar.  It is during these times that you’ll be able to have fun, relax, take care of daily activities and otherwise do things that don’t revolve around college.  If, after you’ve created your college calendar, it looks like there’s not enough time to get these things done, you should re-consider the course load that you’re taking.  If it doesn’t work on paper, it’s probably not going to work in real life either.
