Time Management Tips for College Students

A major cause of academic difficulties for college students is poor time management skills.  College students must be able to budget their time wisely in order to fit in all of their classes, homework, and exam study time as well as any jobs or volunteering that they do, family responsibilities that they may have and social time that they need.  College is a busy time.  Luckily, most college students have the energy and enthusiasm to maintain the busy schedule that is required of that.  With strong time management skills in place, it’s possible to get everything done that you need to and still have some downtime to decompress.

Here are five tips for time management in college that should make the whole process easier for you:

  1. Buy a planner and use it.  You need to have a place where you can budget out your time and see realistically what you need to do to make your schedule work.  Buy a planner or use a spreadsheet on your calendar that will let you budget time for each day.  Make a plan that includes daily study time, the time that you’re in classes, any other commitments that you have to keep and that leaves room for social and downtime.
  2. Study daily.  Many students try to fit studying in where they can and find that there’s never enough time to get things done.  Instead of cramming right before exams or staying up all night before a project is do, use a certain amount of time each day to study.  You’ll keep ahead of your classes and feel more in control of your time.
  3. Set goals.  By having daily, weekly, monthly and semester-long goals that you budget your time for, you can see your progress and make yourself feel on track.  This will help you in setting up your time management plan as well as in committing to it.
  4. Let yourself relax.  Actually schedule certain days of the month that are just for you.  Don’t study on those days, don’t make obligations to anyone else.  Instead, use those days and days off to do something that you really enjoy.  You’ll feel like you got a break and it’ll help you to keep up with the rest of your time management plan.
  5. Remember that you can always make time for the things that matter to you.  There are certain things in life that are important to you; sports teams, relationships, family dinners.  If you have those things in your life, make time for them.  Somehow, the schedule always works out.

Time management is something that you’re going to need to develop as a skill for use throughout the rest of your life.  College is a great time to really learn and hone this skill, since you have a certain schedule to keep each semester and a plan for four or five years that you’re on track for.  By using these set schedules as the basis for your time management plan, working regularly on adapting your schedule to meet all of your school and extracurricular needs and checking in with yourself regularly about how well it’s working for you, you can develop the time management skills that you need in college so you’ll be a more successful individual later on.

I think this is some great advice. Definitely if you want to walk on graduation day, you need to be on top of your academics. Another word of advice would be to make an effort to study at the library. While studying at your apartment, dorm, or fraternity or sorority house can work, nothing beats studying at the library.

    Less distractions = more done!

I see a lot of students that are failing and say they do not have time to study. But if you ask them about American Idol they can tell you everything. It seems that some students just do not have their priorities right. A day planner is a good idea but only if you stick to it.

I also agree with going to the liabary as Chris said. I always get more done away from home, family and friends just remember to leave the cell phone in the car.

When I was in college I used to have the same problem too. Everyday seems like I need more extra time to cope up with my school concerns - projects, activities, homework and a lot more. Even though I don’t have a standard time management before I still made it and thank God I survived all the college challenges.
But now, I come to think that it would have been better if I had a good time management back then because today it is my need.
