I didn't take things very seriously when I applied to college. As a result I ended up at a school that was much below where I could have gone. I'm bored in classes and when I graduate I wont make as much as I would had I truly investigated my options. Heed this advice. Do the research now and apply to places that suit your grades and sat scores.

Sometimes you are better off going to teachers who aren't one of the "usual suspects" when it comes to your letters of recommendations. Your counselor should take into effect your goals and skills and how you are trying to position yourself with the schools to which you are applying. For example, your Math teacher may not be able to write a letter of recommendation to save his life, but if it's Math you want to pursue, then you need to address the problem (e.g. arrange for assistance for him) instead of finding someone else who would not be as relevant.
