Where are the Best Film Schools?

If you’re passionate about your budding film career and you’re getting ready to start applying to film school so that you can go further with it, you might be wondering what the top film schools are.   When you think film, you probably immediately think “Hollywood” so it should be no surprise to find out that four of the top five film schools in the United States are located in California.   Even if you end up not getting in to one of these schools, you’ll find that California has a large selection of film schools to choose from, so you might want to plan to head there when you’re ready to begin your film career.

In the meantime, here’s a more in-depth look at the four California schools which are widely considered the top five best film schools in the United States.

  1. UCLA: The film program at UCLA is widely considered the best film school in the country.   The school has one Bachelor’s degree program for film students who are just starting their college career and also has five different Masters programs and one Doctoral program all related to film.
  2. AFI:   The American Film Institute, known more commonly as AFI, is a well-known film school located in Los Angeles.   It is noted for having a film program which is set up in a style which allows new students to be mentored in film by individuals who are thoroughly knowledgeable about the industry.   The program here is a two year Masters of Arts program.
  3. USC:   Also located in Los Angeles is the University of Southern California which has a multi-faceted film program which is known for the impressive technology available to its film students as well as a long list of alumni active in student affairs.
  4. CalTech:   And speaking of technology, the final film school which makes the California list of best film schools is CalTech.   Although it’s a school for science and technologies, it has a film department which is noted as one of the best in the country, making use of modern technology to create modern art.

These four schools are just the tip of the filmmaking iceberg in terms of California schools which offer courses and degrees in film, but they are considered the best film schools in the entire nation (and even the world).   However, if California just isn’t your thing, you can look into the film program at NYU which is the fifth school rounding out the list of best law schools in the
United States.

The Film School at the New York Film Academy is a very good film and acting school. They offer intensive, hands-on Filmmaking, Screenwriting, Digital Filmmaking, Computer Animation, and Acting For Film Programs. Every film course or acting class at the film school stems from their philosophy of “learning by doing.” It is very, very, hands-on.

The Motion Picture Institute of Michigan (MPI) offers a very good one-year filmmaking program. Students can specialize in directing, screenwriting or general production. Production students typically qualify for positions as camera assistants, grips, boom operators, audio mixers and production assistants when they graduate. Everything is very hands on.

Graduates have gone on to work on independent films, music videos and even mega-budget movies like Batman: The Dark Knight, and Avatar, a James Cameron movie currently in post-production. One graduate has even landed a tv series deal with the Travel Channel.

For more information, visit http://www.mpifilm.com, e-mail info@mpifilm.com, or call 248-528-1760.

Not all the best film schools are in Southern California. The Bay Area near San Francisco has a couple of good ones. The one that stands out is the Berkeley Digital Film Institute. It’s new and they focus on digital technology. They have a pretty good well-rounded program too. You learn everything that will make you a great producer/director. It’s very hands-on, small classes, and you bond with everyone. Check it out: berkeleydigital.com

There are some of the best film schools in California but don’t forget about New York! We have a school in California backlot of Universal Studios and also in New York City. New York City is the mecca of independent film, while California, Hollywood is home of big budget movies.

Are you serious? California and New York City is the only place that have the best study that I can take? Is there any other location or place that are good enough in studies of acting/filmmaking?

To Oren, Northwestern (in Chicago) is considered top notch. Also University of
Colorado at Boulder I hear has a good film school. The Southpark boys came
    out of there.
