Checklist For Moving Into Your Dorm

Checklist for Moving Into Your Dorm

What Should You Bring When Moving Into a DormMoving into your college dorm is both exciting and nerve-wracking.  You’re probably moving away from the hometown where your family and friends are located and you’re going to be meeting an entirely new set of people in a new town.  There’s going to be a lot to try to remember as you make the move and you probably want to try to make sure that you don’t forget anything when you’re preparing for moving into your dorm room.

Here is a helpful checklist of things that you’ll want to make sure that you’ve taken care of so you don’t forget the important stuff as you enter this new and exciting period of your life.

__ Get in touch with your roommate in advance of the move if possible.  Email and phone conversations before the move can help roommates to feel more comfortable with each other.

__ Sort through your personal items to determine which ones should come with you and which can stay at home.  You will want to bring some items, like a small photo album and a majority of your clothes, but there will be other items that you may want to save but don’t need to have with you in your dorm.  These can be left at your parents’ home or placed in storage.

__ Figure out what to do about a personal computer.  Are you taking yours?  Are you getting a laptop?  Will you be using what the school offers?

__  Purchase a First Aid Kit for your dorm.  Also purchase a flashlight for safety reasons.

__ Do some thrift store and yard sale shopping to pick up new items that you’ll probably want to have in your dorm room.  These might include:

  • Bedside lamp / nightlight
  • Blender
  • Coffee pot
  • Comforter / Blankets
  • Cutlery
  • Laundry sorter / laundry basket
  • Mini-fridge
  • Toaster / Toaster Oven
  • Trash Can

__  Pack the new and old items for moving to your dorm.  Make sure to label all of your boxes clearly so that you’ll be able to easily access the items you need first when moving into your dorm.

__ Make plans for moving into your dorm.  Figure out who is going to help you with moving.  Book the UHaul or make shipping arrangements.

__ Leave a day for your goodbyes at home.  Moving into your dorm room is exciting but saying goodbye to your friends and family is hard.  You want to be able to do this without having any last-minute packing or problems to take care of.

__ Make the move!  You’re about to embark on a new adventure in life.  Embrace every moment.

I would also advice to bring your own mugs and other personal items. Dorm kitchens suck :)

Moving things can be difficult, not if you have someone, a professional or not, to help you out.

I loved your helpful checklist of things. This make me update to new places and within time. But to have own personal Items is most convenient to make easy all going, even though its difficult to carry but with profession this is keen required. Thank you.

I recommend keeping it simple by bringing the larger more expensive or heavy items first and then worry about purchasing/moving smaller less important/cheaper items after you have the main items in place.

I still remember those golden days in my life. The first day moving to the university hostel as a first year student. Even though we have prepared everything, there will be something missing. Probably I miss my family members or friends there.
